Les Caves on Tour

Les Caves Sicilian Odyssey

We have just come back from our annual company trip and this year we found ourselves in stunning Sicily. Our first full day was spent sailing around the Aegadian Islands on a traditional Caicco sailing boat, a great day of sun, sea and swimming was had by all, helped along by some fantastic wines from the Marco de Bartoli estate.

Marco De Bartoli is considered one of Sicily’s winemaking pioneers for his long-standing commitment to the native Sicilian white grape varieties, Grillo and Zibibbo which are produced on two separate estates: the first in Marsala, in Sicily’s south-west corner, the other on the small island of Pantelleria, south-west of Sicily. His belief in the value of traditional methods of production of these grapes and their wines is complemented by his equally strong belief in the future of Sicily as one of Europe’s most vital viticultural areas.

Particular highlights of the day were the fantastically fresh Grillo Vigna Verde 2016, and the amazingly aromatic Pietra Nera made from 100% Zibbibo.

The merriment continued on dry land, where we were treated to a fascinating tour of the celler and solera rooms at De Bartoli, followed by a Sicilian feast accompanied by yet more of De Bartoli’s incredible wines; this time with a focus on the other wine styles, starting off with the beautifully nutty sparkling, Terzavia Brut Nature NV, and finishing off with the magical Vecchio Samperi.

On Sunday we woke early…some might argue too early(!) but our early rise was rewarded by a visit to Cantine Rallo – producers of the insanely affordable (and quaffable!) Ciello and Baglio wines. Cantine Rallo have been involved in the production of wine since 1860, with the founder of the cellars originally producing Marsala wine. The Vesco family took over the business in the late 1990s and now also produces a range of dry wines with a focus on Cataratto and Nero D’Avola. In this time, they have invested heavily in cutting edge technology in the winery but also revolutionised the viticultural practices, which are now certified organic.

A huge thank you to both Marco de Bartoli and to Cantine Rallo for their wonderful hospitality!

Even though we are now online we would still love to see you, so why not pop down to the shop where we always have a bottle of something open to taste.

 Domaine Champalou, 2013 Le Portail
From one of the most highly accalimed growers in Vouvray, the Portail balances the richness of fruit with lemon acidity perfectly.

Weingut Untermoserhof, 2014 Magdalener Klassich
A blend of predominantly Schiava with a small proprtion of Lagrein, Schiava is a relatively pale-skinned grape and its high acidity give the wine a biting bitter cherry freshness. whilst the Lagrein confers spicy weight and a chocolatey texture.
